Lifting Each Other Up

 Galatians 6: 2 (NKJV)

Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ

Galatians chapter 6 presents principles of how as believers in Jesus Christ, we need to relate to one another. It exhorts a spirit of meekness, humility, gentleness and kindness to all men, especially other believers. The attributes emphasized fit in very well with the fruit of the Spirit presented in Galatians 5:22 – 23. In drawing us to Himself, God entrusts us to impact the world that we live in, that those around us benefit and get to know the Lord from just being in close proximity with us. It is often said that you might be the only bible that some people will ever read. James writes, Faith without works is dead (James 2:14 – 26).

I have of late been challenged by how selfish we have become so that it is all about the rat race of life. Yes, we need to do our best to make the most for ourselves, but it should not always be just about ourselves. The Lord Jesus left His throne for fallen man, His love and compassion for our lives compelled Him to make the ultimate sacrifice with His life. As His followers who imitate our Lord and Saviour, we cannot do anything less but to consider others, remember them in prayer and act out with hearts of compassion and love to help them along. Just like we all need a helping hand in our journey, others need it too. We cannot afford to be so selfish that we do not consider fellow travellers as being in need, at times just for a word of encouragement.

A particular group of believers that I observe who need our prayers, love, support, and encouragement are those who are ministers of the gospel. Every one of us looks up to them for spiritual nourishment and prayer when we are in need, but they do not receive the same support when they need it. They are on the front lines of the battle for lives, and their expectation of them is high. While we might not know all that they struggle with, we know they are human, and they get tired and are just like us. In Exodus 17:8-13, we find the Israelites fighting against the Amalekites. For the battle to be won, Moses had to keep his hands up throughout, and when he got tired, Aaron and Hur supported his hands up to ensure victory. Could it be time for us to support those that we hold in high esteem, including our spiritual leaders? There is a blessing in supporting others along the way, as we all match towards eternity. It is the act of being “my brother’s keeper”

Thoughts:

Do you know anyone who needs your support, prayers or giving?

Would you commit to holding someone else up in prayer as the Lord leads?

How do we live according to Hebrews 10:24?
